Python Tech Lead – Back-Office Engineering | Global Trading Firm | Sydney

The firm

A global trading firm with a strong engineering culture. Technology sits at the centre of everything it does, and engineers work directly with the business rather than through layers of process.

The team

You'll lead a small, growing Python team that builds tools, data platforms and dashboards for the firm's control and support functions: Compliance, Finance, Risk and Operations. This hire will bring senior technical depth, structure and delivery leadership. The team is also building agentic AI workflows that analyse compliance and risk events and that stakeholders use directly.

The role

This is a hands-on lead role. Around 80% of the time is spent on technical work. It is not a hands-off management position.

You will:

1. Design, build and review production Python systems and set technical direction and standards
2. Own delivery end to end: scoping, prioritisation, workflow set-up and getting things shipped
3. Act as the main technical partner to senior Compliance, Finance and Risk stakeholders, translating their needs into well-built solutions
4. Mentor and develop junior engineers, including direct line management
5. Help shape how the team adopts AI and agentic tooling

What you'll need (essential)

1. Financial markets industry experience is required. You must have worked in a bank, trading firm, hedge fund or asset manager. Candidates without this background will not be considered.
2. Domain experience in back-office or middle-office technology is required. You must have built systems for Compliance, Finance, Regulatory Reporting, Risk or Operations, and understand how those functions work and what they need.
3. 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong, current, hands-on Python
4. Proven experience as a tech lead or delivery lead, including people with direct reports
5. Strong stakeholder management with senior non-technical users. You are comfortable pushing back, setting priorities and owning outcomes.
6. A level-headed, structured approach to delivery and team workflow

Nice to have

1. Experience building with LLMs, AI agents or agentic workflows
2. Experience with data platforms, data pipelines or internal dashboarding and tooling
