Software Data Engineer

A leading global investment firm is looking for a Software Engineer to join its growing engineering team in Hong Kong.

This is a hands-on platform engineering role focused on improving how business-critical datasets are onboarded, validated, monitored and operated in production. You will build software and tooling that helps engineering and investment teams identify data issues earlier, understand their impact and maintain confidence in the information supporting research and trading.

The role sits at the intersection of software engineering, data infrastructure and platform reliability. It is best suited to someone who enjoys building robust internal products and frameworks rather than working solely on data pipelines or analytics.

Your role:

1. Design and build platforms for managing the quality and reliability of production data
2. Develop monitoring, validation and alerting capabilities across critical datasets
3. Build reusable libraries, frameworks and developer tooling
4. Improve the onboarding and ongoing operation of new data sources
5. Create services and interfaces that make data health easier to understand
6. Investigate complex production issues and implement long-term engineering improvements
7. Work closely with software engineers, data specialists and investment stakeholders
8. Contribute to technical design, architecture and engineering standards

Current skills:

1. Strong software engineering experience, particularly with Python
2. A solid grounding in computer science, software design and data structures
3. Experience building production platforms, frameworks or internal tooling
4. An understanding of data quality, observability, monitoring or reliability
5. Experience with containerised or cloud-based environments
6. Strong ownership and the ability to take projects from initial design through to production
7. Clear communication and the ability to work with both technical and business stakeholders

We are particularly interested in engineers with strong technical and academic foundations who have genuinely designed and built production data platforms, tooling or frameworks, not simply maintained existing pipelines and systems.

1. Experience working with large-scale or time-sensitive datasets
2. Exposure to Kubernetes, distributed systems or cloud infrastructure
3. Experience developing shared Python libraries or platform APIs
4. Familiarity with data validation and observability frameworks
5. Previous experience in financial services, trading or investment management

Industry experience is not essential. Engineers from technology companies or other data-intensive environments are encouraged to apply.
