Senior Electrical Engineer

Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, combining global scale with an expanded portfolio of leading-edge technologies that include: 3D metrology spanning the chip from nanometer-scale transistors to micron-level die-interconnects; macro defect inspection of wafers and packages; metal interconnect composition; factory analytics; and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

At Onto Innovation, you will play a key role in developing and sustaining the electrical infrastructure of advanced semiconductor metrology and inspection equipment. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will own machine-level electrical integration, with a primary focus on cable and harness architecture, power distribution, safety circuits, compliance, and PCB layout coordination.

You will translate system requirements into robust electrical designs that are safe, serviceable, manufacturable, and compliant. Working closely with mechanical, systems, controls, manufacturing, service, and supplier teams, you will guide designs from concept and detailed engineering through integration, qualification, and release to production.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design and integration of semiconductor capital equipment and complex machine subsystems.

• Develop machine-level cable, harness, and interconnect architectures, including connector selection, pin assignments, shielding, grounding, strain relief, service loops, bend radii, and routing constraints.

• Create and maintain cable diagrams, wiring schematics, interconnect drawings, cable schedules, bills of material, and installation documentation.

• Develop system power budgets and power-distribution architectures, including load analysis, voltage-drop calculations, protection, power sequencing, inrush-current considerations, and thermal derating.

• Design and validate safety circuits, interlocks, emergency-stop chains, protective functions, and related diagnostic coverage in collaboration with systems and safety stakeholders.

• Ensure electrical designs meet applicable product safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and semiconductor-equipment compliance requirements.

• Design PCBs for power, control, sensor, and interface boards.

• Perform design reviews, electrical risk assessments, tolerance and derating analyses, and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses for new and existing designs.

• Plan and execute prototype bring-up, electrical integration, troubleshooting, verification, validation, and compliance testing.

• Investigate field and production issues, identify root causes, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.

• Develop production test requirements, acceptance criteria, test procedures, and documentation for manufacturing and service.

• Collaborate with suppliers to specify, develop, qualify, and release cables, harnesses, electrical assemblies, PCBs, power supplies, and safety-related components.

• Work cross-functionally with mechanical, software, systems, manufacturing, quality, service, and applications teams throughout the product lifecycle.

• Provide clear written and verbal communication of requirements, designs, risks, status, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Provide technical guidance to other engineers and contribute to electrical design standards and best practices.

• International and domestic travel as required (up to 15%).

Qualifications

Required

• BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with 7+ years of relevant experience in a product-development or capital-equipment environment.

• Proven experience with machine-level electrical integration, cable and harness design, interconnect architecture, and electrical documentation.

• Experience developing power budgets and power-distribution designs for complex equipment.

• Working knowledge of electrical safety circuits, machine interlocks, grounding, shielding, and protection concepts.

• Experience with schematic-capture and PCB-layout tools; familiarity with Altium Designer is a plus.

• Understanding of PCB design and routing considerations for power, mixed-signal, digital, sensor, and industrial interface circuits.

• Experience conducting design reviews, troubleshooting electrical systems, and supporting prototype integration and product qualification.

• Ability to translate system requirements into clear electrical specifications, drawings, test plans, and acceptance criteria.

• Knowledge of product-development practices, configuration control, and release-to-manufacturing processes.

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary development environment.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work across engineering, operations, service, management, suppliers, and customers.

Preferred

• Experience with semiconductor metrology, inspection, lithography, automated test equipment, or other complex industrial equipment.

• Familiarity with relevant compliance frameworks and standards, such as SEMI, CE, UL, IEC, NFPA, and EMC requirements.

• Experience supporting third-party certification, compliance testing, and technical construction-file documentation.

• Knowledge of industrial power supplies, power-distribution components, contactors, relays, circuit protection, sensors, and safety-rated components.

• Experience working with cable, harness, PCB, and electrical-assembly suppliers from specification through qualification and production release.

• Familiarity with cleanroom equipment, serviceability requirements, and design for manufacturing and assembly.

Personal Attributes

• Strong problem-solving mindset with a practical, hands-on approach.

• Structured and detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and documentation accuracy.

• Able to balance performance, compliance, manufacturability, serviceability, schedule, and cost.

• Clear communicator who can explain electrical risks and trade-offs to multidisciplinary stakeholders.

• Self-driven, collaborative, and comfortable taking ownership from concept through production release.

• Continuous-improvement mindset with a passion for reliable and well-engineered equipment.
