Kalshi's CEO wants to replicate the "aura" of Stripe's Collison brothers

A decade ago, Stripe was a fast-rising fintech with only a few hundred employees and a knack for attracting talented technologists. Today, Stripe has thousands of employees and that rising star status now arguably belongs to prediction markets like Kalshi. Tarek Mansour, the latter firm's CEO, said in a recent podcast that he doesn't like to follow the playbooks of other founders, but makes an exception for John and Patrick Collison, the brothers behind Stripe.

Speaking to VC firm Sequoia, Mansour said that he and co-founder Luana Lopes Lara are "entrepreneurially illiterate... we haven't read all the books, we haven't watched all the podcasts." Instead he aims to recreate aspects of CEOs he looks up to. In the case of the Collisons, Mansour said they "have done such a great job at creating this brand aura around their company to attract incredibly like talented people."

Kalshi doesn't appear to employ any ex-Stripe employees, but reviews for the fintech on Glassdoor are very similar to old reviews for Stripe. Employees say it's "not for the faint of heart" and you'll work long hours, but there's a lot of "talent density."

Mansour also said that he admired the Collisons' ability to "build something that just goes beyond what the company is exactly building." Stripe started out as a pure payments infrastructure firm but now has upwards of 20 different types of product, from stablecoins to invoicing automation. Kalshi has been expanding its remit in recent years too; it established its own separate market making entity last year to provide liquidity to the platform and launched an academic research arm last December.

The Collisons aren't the only founders Mansour admires. He also said that Elon Musk has a similar ability to attract talent alongside an "extreme boldness."
